Podocnemis unifilis

It is recognized by its oval shell, brown or blackish, its distinctive small keels on the second and third shield and yellow dots next to the head (most prominent in juveniles).

As in other turtle species, there is significant sexual dimorphism in the shape of the plastron: the females are flat, the male is becoming concave during development.

Females can grow up to two times longer than the male: males reach an average of 40 cm and females, about 80 cm.

It is the largest turtle genus Podocnemis: the largest is Podocnemis expansa.

Unifilis Podocnemis is a so-called "turtle neck tilted 'does not hide his head in the shell with a straight motion until the end of the retraction, but doubles the neck after insertion.

The female spawn twice a year, and in each spawning places from 4 to 35 eggs. Spawning occurs in the dry season to prevent eggs being swept away by floods.

The nest, a result of the excavation in sandy areas near the banks of rivers, consists of two chambers: a deep water for eggs and other shallow for hatchlings born and waiting for the night at the exit to be avoiding sunlight.
