Moon Jellies

The medusa is translucent, usually about 25–40 cm in diameter, and can be recognized by its four horseshoe-shaped gonads, easily seen through the top of the bell. It feeds by collecting medusae, plankton and mollusks with its tentacles, and bringing them into its body for digestion. It is capable of only limited motion, and drifts with the current, even when swimming.

 A. aurita and other Aurelia species feed on plankton that includes organisms such as mollusks, crustaceans, tunicate larvae, rotifers, young polychaetes, protozoans, diatoms, eggs, fish eggs, and other small organisms. Occasionally, they are also seen feeding on gelatinous zooplankton such as hydromedusae and ctenophores. Both the adult medusae and larvae of Aurelia have nematocysts to capture prey and also to protect themselves from predators.

The food is caught with its nematocyst-laden tentacles, tied with mucus, brought to the gastrovascular cavity, and passed into the cavity by ciliated action. There digestive enzymes from serous cell break down the food. There is little known about the requirements for particular vitamins and minerals, but due to the presence of some digestive enzymes, we can deduce in general that A. aurita can process carbohydrates, proteins and lipids

Aurelia jellyfish naturally die after living and reproducing for several months. It is probably rare for these moon jellies to live more than about six months in the wild, although specimens cared for in public aquarium exhibits typically live several to many years. In the wild, the warm water at the end of summer combines with exhaustive daily reproduction and lower natural levels of food for tissue repair, leaving these jellyfish more susceptible to bacterial and other disease problems that likely lead to the demise of most individuals.

Cuttlefishes

Cuttlefish have an internal shell (the cuttlebone), eight arms and two tentacles furnished with denticulated suckers, with which they secure their prey. They generally range in size from 15 cm (5.9 in) to 25 cm (9.8 in), with the largest species, Sepia apama, reaching 50 cm (20 in) in mantle length and over 10.5 kg (23 lb) in weight.

Cuttlefish eat small molluscs, crabs, shrimp, fish, octopuses, worms, and other cuttlefish. Their predators include dolphins, sharks, fish, seals, seabirds and other cuttlefish. Their life expectancy is about one to two years. Recent studies indicate that cuttlefish are among the most intelligent invertebrates. Cuttlefish also have one of the largest brain-to-body size ratios of all invertebrates.

Sepia comer pequeños moluscos, cangrejos, camarones, peces, pulpos, gusanos y otras sepias.

Cuttlefish possess an internal structure called the cuttlebone, which is porous and is made of aragonite. This provides the cuttlefish with buoyancy, which it regulates by changing the gas-to-liquid ratio in the chambered cuttlebone via the ventral siphuncle. Each species' cuttlebone has a distinct shape, size, and pattern of ridges or texture. The cuttlebone is unique to cuttlefish, and is one of the features that distinguish them from their squid relatives. Jewellers and silversmiths traditionally use cuttlebones as moulds for casting small objects, but they are probably better known as the tough material given to parakeets and other caged birds as a source of dietary calcium.

Cuttlefish, like other cephalopods, have sophisticated eyes. The organogenesis and final structure of the cephalopod eye differs fundamentally from that of vertebrates like humans. Superficial similarities between cephalopod and vertebrate eyes are thought to be examples of convergent evolution. The cuttlefish pupil is large and round, though it looks like it is W-shaped when the eye is not fully opened due to the curvy shape of the eyelids.

Although at least one cuttlefish species failed to distinguish colors in a laboratory test, they can perceive the polarization of light, which enhances their perception of contrast. They have two spots of concentrated sensor cells on their retina (known as foveae), one to look more forward, and one to look more backward. The eye changes focus by shifting the position of the entire lens with respect to the retina, instead of reshaping the lens as in mammals. Unlike the vertebrate eye, there is no blind spot, because the optic nerve is positioned behind the retina.

Harp Seals

The harp seal has a black face with silvery-gray body. Its eyes are pure black. It has black harp or wishbone-shaped markings on the back. They exhibit little sexual dimorphism. The baby harp seal (pup) has a yellow-white coat at birth, but after three days, the coat turns white and stays white for about 12 days. Adult harp seals grow up to be 1.7 to 2.0 m (5 to 6 feet) long and weigh from 140 to 190 kg (300 to 400 pounds).

Females mature sexually at age five to six. Annually thereafter, they bear one pup, usually in late February. The fertilized egg grows into a spherical embryo that implants in the uterus only after three or so months, to allow birth to take place while sufficient pack ice is available.

Newborn pups weigh around 11 kilograms (24 lb) and are 80–85 centimetres (31–33 in) long. After birth, the mother only feeds that pup. During the 12 day nursing period, the mother does not eat, losing up to 3 kilograms (7 lb) per day. Harp seal milk contains up to 48% fat, so pups gain over 2.2 kilograms (4.9 lb) per day. During this time, the juvenile's "greycoat" grows in beneath the white neonatal coat, and it weighs 80 pounds (36 kg). Weaning is abrupt; the mother turns from nursing to promiscuous mating, leaving the pup behind on the ice. While courtship starts on the ice, mating usually takes place in the water

The stranded pup cries at first, and then becomes sedentary to conserve body fat. Within a few days, it sheds its white coat, reaching the "beater" stage.

Pups are unable to swim or find food until seven to eight weeks old or until the ice melts, leaving them vulnerable to polar bears and other predators. This fast costs them up to 50% of their weight. As many as 30% of pups die during their first year, due in part to their early immobility because they learn to swim only slowly.

At about 13–14 months old, the pup molts again, becoming a "bedlamer". Juveniles molt several times, producing a "spotted harp", before the adult's harp-marked pelt fully emerges after several years (or not all in females)

Blue-ringed Octopuses

The blue-ringed octopuses (genus Hapalochlaena) are three (or perhaps four) octopus species that live in tide pools and coral reefs in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, from Japan to Australia (mainly around southern New South Wales and South Australia). They are recognized as one of the world's most venomous marine animals. Despite their small size and relatively docile nature, they can prove a danger to humans

Their diet typically consists of small crabs and shrimps, but they may also feed on fish if they can catch them. The blue-ringed octopus pounces on its prey, seizing it with its arms and pulling it towards its mouth. It uses its horny beak to pierce through the tough exoskeleton, introducing its venom. The venom paralyzes the muscles required for breathing and movement. The octopus then rips away part of the shell with its beak and sucks out the flesh from the crustacean's exoskeleton

The mating ritual for the blue-ringed octopus begins when a male approaches a female and begins to caress her with his modified arm, the hectocotylus. A male mates with a female by grabbing her mantle, which sometimes completely obscures the female's vision, then transferring sperm packets by inserting his hectocotylus into her mantle cavity repeatedly. Mating continues until the female has had enough, and in at least one species the female has to remove the over-enthusiastic male by force. Males will attempt copulation with members of their own species regardless of sex or size, however interactions between males are most often shorter in duration and end with the mounting octopus withdrawing the hectocotylus without packet insertion or struggle.

Blue-ringed octopus females lay only one clutch of about fifty eggs in their lifetime towards the end of autumn. Eggs are laid then incubated underneath the female's arms for approximately six months, and during this process she does not eat. After the eggs hatch, the female dies, and the new offspring will reach maturity and be able to mate by the next year.

The blue-ringed octopus is 12 to 20 cm (5 to 8 inches), but its venom is powerful enough to kill humans. There is no blue-ringed octopus antivenom available.

The octopus produces venom that contains tetrodotoxin, 5-hydroxytryptamine, hyaluronidase, tyramine, histamine, tryptamine, octopamine, taurine, acetylcholine, and dopamine.

Vampire Squids, Vampyroteuthis infernalis

The vampire squid reaches a maximum total length of around 30 cm (1 ft). Its 15 cm (6 inch) gelatinous body varies in color between velvety jet-black and pale reddish, depending on location and lighting conditions. A webbing of skin connects its eight arms, each lined with rows of fleshy spines or cirri; the inside of this "cloak" is black. Only the distal half (farthest from the body) of the arms have suckers. Its limpid, globular eyes, which appear red or blue, depending on lighting, are proportionately the largest in the animal kingdom at 2.5 cm (1 inch) in diameter. The animal's dark color, cloak-like webbing, and red eyes are what gave the vampire squid its name.

The vampire squid is almost entirely covered in light-producing organs called photophores. The animal has great control over the organs, capable of producing disorienting flashes of light for fractions of a second to several minutes in duration. The intensity and size of the photophores can also be modulated. Appearing as small white discs, the photophores are larger and more complex at the tips of the arms and at the base of the two fins, but are absent from the underside of the caped arms. Two larger white areas on top of the head were initially believed to also be photophores, but have turned out to be photoreceptors.

They are small "squids" reaching maximum lengths of 28 external cm (with mantle external lengths of typically 7.9-12.1 external cm . Like true squids, there is sexual dimorphism external in size: females are larger than males. Vampyroteuthis infernalis has eight long arms and two filaments that extend well past the total length of their body which they can retract into pockets found in their webbing between their arms. They were at first thought to be arms, however they are different in structure and composition, therefore they are believed to be a uniquely derived trait of this amazing species. Suckers are found on the distal external half of their arms.

There are two fins on the dorsal (upper) surface of their mantles. An interesting phenomenon in this squid is the metamorphosis of the size, shape, and position of the fins as they grow. When their mantles are 15-25 external mm in length, a second pair of fins begins to develop in front of their first pair. When the new pair reaches maturity, the original pair is then reabsorbed. The new fins change the vampire squid's swimming style from jet propulsion external to fin propulsion.

The body composition of the vampire squid is similar to that of a jellyfish. They have very large eyes; proportionally they have the largest eye-to-body ratio of any animal in the world.

Sevengill Sharks, Notorynchus cepedianus

Sevengill sharks, named for having seven gill slits on either side of their bodies, reach lengths of at least 3 m with an average length of 1.5 m. They weigh up to 107 kg and are known to live as long as 49 years. Sevengills are thought to reach sexual maturity when they reach 1.5 to 2.2 m in length.

These are large active sharks with wide heads, small eyes, short blunt snouts and fusiform (spindle-shaped, wide in the middle, tapering at both ends) bodies. They have small single dorsal fins that are set far back over their pelvic fins external. Their anal fin is smaller than their dorsal fin.

The mode of reproduction in the sevengill shark is ovoviviparity. The eggs hatch within the female's body with the embryos receiving nourishment via a yolksac inside the uterus. When the yolksac is depleted, the embryos absorb nutrients from secretions within the uterus until they are born. The females move into shallow bays to give birth after a 12 month gestation period. This occurs during the spring and early summer months. Each litter may number up to 82 pups, each measuring about 16-18 inches (40-45 cm) in length. Throughout the first few years, the young sharks remain in the shallow water nursery grounds before moving to offshore environments.

The maximum published length of the sevengill shark is 9.8 feet (3 m) total length and the maximum reported weight is 236 pounds (107 kg). Males reach maturity at 4.9 feet (1.5 m) in length while females become mature at approximately 7.2 feet (2.2 m). The life expectancy of this species is about 50 years.

Sevengill sharks are reddish-brown to silvery-gray or olive-brown with numerous small black spots on their bodies and fins; their undersides are a light or cream color. This counter-shading is a common type of camouflage that helps the sevengill blend into the sea bottom or ocean depths when viewed from above and the lighter surface waters when viewed from below. This counter-shading is also common among many pelagic species of sharks and fishes as well as other marine species.

Bigeyed sixgill shark

The bigeyed sixgill shark, Hexanchus nakamurai, is a cow shark of the family Hexanchidae. Its dorsal surface has a brownish-gray color, and is sharply separated from the light coloring of its ventral surface. The eyes are a fluorescent green while the shark is alive. The body of this shark is small, slim, and fusiform in shape. As the name suggests, this shark has six gill slits, unusual among most shark species. The head is narrow and somewhat flattened, and the mouth contains 5 rows of large, comb-shaped teeth. This shark's single dorsal fin is pushed back towards the caudal fin, and is behind the pelvic fins. The upper caudal fin is much longer than the lower, with a deep notch near the tip. All fins have thin white margins on the edge. In juveniles, the upper caudal fin has a black tip.

Little is known about the feeding habits of the bigeyed sixgill. It is thought, based on the few stomach examinations of these sharks, that they mainly feed on small to moderately-sized bony fish and crustaceans. Like all sharks of the order Hexanchiformes found so far, this shark is ovoviviparous, meaning that the eggs are retained inside the body until hatching. The bigeyed sixgill, after an unknown gestation period, gives birth to litters of up to 13 pups. It is very possible, because of the size of this shark, that their main predators are larger sharks

Bigeyed sixgills are likely found worldwide. So far they have mainly been found in the Caribbean Sea, the west-central Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the western Pacific Ocean. These sharks live near the sea floor between 90m and 600m, but may move closer to the surface at night to take advantage of the food that gathers there. They make their home on continental shelves, insular shelves, and upper slopes. These sharks do not inhabit abyssal environments

Bigeyed sixgill sharks have been found to reach up to 1.8 m in length, averaging about 1.2 m, and weigh about 20 kg. They are thought to reach sexual maturity when they are 1.2 to 1.78 m in length.

Bigeyed sixgill sharks are small, slim, deepwater cowsharks with narrow heads, large fluorescent green eyes (like sharpnose sevengills), blunt pointy snouts, and fusiform (spindle-shaped) bodies. Their small dorsal fin is set far back over their pelvic fins and they are typically light brownish-gray above and lighter below with white trailing margins on their fins. Young bigeyed sixgills have a black-tipped upper caudal fin

Giant Pacific Octopus

Enteroctopus dofleini, also known as the giant Pacific octopus or North Pacific giant octopus, is a large cephalopod belonging to the genus Enteroctopus. It can be found in the coastal North Pacific, usually at a depth of around 65 meters (215 ft). It can, however, live in much shallower or much deeper waters. It is arguably the largest octopus species, based on a scientific record of a 71 kg (156.5 lb) individual weighed live. The alternative contender is the Seven-arm Octopus based on a 61 kg (134 lb) carcass estimated to have a live mass of 75 kg (165 lb)

This species of octopus commonly preys upon shrimp, crabs, scallops, abalone, clams, and fish. Food is procured with its suckers and then crushed using its tough "beak" of chitin. They have also been observed in captivity catching Spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) of up to 3-4 feet in length.Additionally, consumed carcasses of this same shark species have been found in Giant Pacific Octopus middens in the wild, providing strong evidence that these octopuses prey on small sharks in their natural habitat

The Giant Pacific Octopus is considered to be short-lived for an animal of its size, with life spans that average only 3-5 years in the wild. To make up for its relatively short life span, the octopus is extremely prolific. It can lay up to 100,000 eggs which are intensively cared for by the females, who die protecting the eggs. Hatchlings are about the size of a grain of rice, and very few survive to adulthood.

During reproduction, the male octopus deposits a spermatophore (or sperm packet) more than 1 meter long. Large spermatophores are characteristic of octopuses in this genus.

Adults usually weigh around 15 kg (33 lb), with an arm span of up to 4.3 m (14 ft). However, there are highly questionable records of specimens up to 272 kg (600 lb) in weight with a 9 m (30 ft) arm span. The mantle of the octopus is spherical in shape and contains most of the animal's major organs. By contracting or expanding tiny pigment-containing granules within cells known as chromatophores in its tissue, an octopus can change the color of its skin, giving it the ability to blend in to the environment.
